Mitchell Wilson was born in Toronto, Ontario but he has spent most of his life in Simcoe County, several miles north. From a young age he spent his summer’s traveling through the United States on family vacations. It was here, while trekking along the Carolina coast, and through the Appalachian, Catskill, and Pocono Mountains in his family’s old station wagon (which suffered many breakdowns during these annual trips), that Mitchell discovered the rich American roots music tradition. When he became old enough, Mitchell began learning guitar and harmonica, and frequented the open mics and jam sessions tucked away in the hills of Ontario’s Oro-Medonte Region. Here he refined his sound into a unique but accessible blend of folk, old-time, bluegrass, country, Cajun, early blues, and good, old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. Unlike most artists in todays folk and roots music scene, who are singer/songwriters, Mitchell Wilson chooses to bring his audiences songs written by the real people who have lived the lives they sing about, be it songs of drugs and crime in New York’s Catskill Mountains, or the work of a long forgotten 1920’s bluesman brought forward into the twenty-first century. All of this is mixed in with more familiar covers by the likes of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Band, Johnny Cash, Levon Helm, John Prine and many others. Mitchell Wilson’s performances bring together the full range of his influences into a unique experience which is sometimes fun, sometimes thoughtful and introspective, and always entertaining.
